The Carcer Tullianum or Mamertine Prison is a unique place that brings to mind Rome's implacable justice against its internal or external enemies. Those who entered this prison did not come out alive.
External enemies such as Jugurtha, king of Numidia, first an ally and then an enemy of Rome, and Vercingetorix, the king of the Gauls defeated by Julius Caesar, ended their days here. Here also many Romans lost their lives, like the followers of Catiline, the man who around the middle of the 1st century BC tried to subvert, without success,  the Roman Republic and in particular the power of the senatorial oligarchy. But this is also the place where Christian tradition recalls the last days of Saints Peter and Paul and of so many other Christian martyrs, considered for their faith as enemies of the Roman order.
The visit to the Tullianum is undoubtedly an experience not to be missed.
